Daily Leaf Collection Begins Monday, October 24

October 21, 2022 by smetcalf@bexley.org

City crews will begin collecting leaves next week starting on Monday, working their way from west to east. For a daily status update of leaf pickup crews and a map, visit bexley.org/leafpickup. Weather depending, this program will conclude in early-to-mid December after three complete sweeps of the city. Below are a few simple guidelines to follow to ensure leaves are picked up in a timely and efficient manner:

  • Rake leaves to the back of the curb but not in the street. If possible, please avoid placing leaf piles near mailboxes, trees, lights or signs.
  • Leaves will be collected on a weekly basis as the city will deploy one crew in north, central and south Bexley.
  • Please keep leaves out of storm water sewers and stream banks. Leaves cause bacteria that depletes oxygen and can kill fish and other stream organisms.
  • Leaves can also be collected during scheduled yard waste collection dates if they are placed in paper yard waste bags or in a container marked as yard waste.

Community Update: Proposed Mixed-Income Housing at Livingston and Cassady

October 11, 2022 by bkessler@bexley.org

Updated: October 10, 2022

Background:
In late 2020, The Community Builders, a developer of mixed-income housing, submitted a zoning application for approval of a proposed multi-site mixed-income development to be located at 2300 East Livingston Avenue (27 1-3 bedroom units) and 420 North Cassady Avenue (18 1-bedroom units). The project was submitted to a competitive annual federal tax credit program in early 2021 and, after not being selected for that years’ funding, was resubmitted and approved for the 2022 round.

Current Status:
With a federal tax credit award in hand, this project is awaiting finalization of zoning entitlements and architectural review approval.

In 2021, residents in the vicinity of the 2300 East Livingston Avenue site appealed the City’s Board of Zoning and Planning decision. City Council initially declined to hear the appeal out of concern that some council members had a conflict of interest, but after a Common Pleas judge determined their conflict of interest concerns were not relevant Council heard the appeal and upheld the decision of the BZAP. The Council decision was then appealed to the Common Pleas Court, where it was reversed in a decision released in August of 2022. The developer and the City of Bexley have both separately appealed that decision. The City’s appeal is consistent with standard practice to defend decisions of the City’s Board of Zoning and Planning as upheld by City Council, and is being overseen by the City Attorney with the participation of outside zoning counsel.

Upcoming Process:
While the 2300 East Livingston zoning question is reviewed by the 10th District Court of Appeals, the applicant is still in the process of continuing due diligence in their application, including moving forward with architectural review. A decision from the 10th District will take some time to arrive, and this development is expected to continue to have a protracted timeline.

From The Torch to the Pulitzer Prize

October 6, 2022 by smetcalf@bexley.org

From editor at The Torch to editor at The Baltimore Sun, Bexley High School alum Ellen Fishel (’09) will share her journey in conversation with Amy Vick (’91), Vice President for Communications and Marketing for The Columbus Foundation.

Having both served as editors of The Torch, our guests will share their insight into how their experiences with the school’s paper helped mold their careers in journalism and about the field today.

Fishel recently retired from journalism after serving as the Director of Content, Breaking News at The Baltimore Sun, where she was a member of the team that won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting.

Vick received her Bachelors of Arts in Journalism from Ohio University.

Update Regarding Incident at the Main Event

October 3, 2022 by smetcalf@bexley.org

At the Main Event on Friday, September 30, 2022, the Bexley Police Department assigned an officer with equestrian experience to escort a mature, trained show horse, which was accompanying him as part of a pilot community relations effort. During the event, a 9 year-old was struck by the animal, requiring medical attention and observation.

We strive to create an engaging and safe environment for all guests at community events and recognize when those efforts fall short. We will work to ensure that an accident like this does not occur again in the future.
