Flock Safety Camera FAQ

What is Flock Safety?

Flock Safety cameras are an investigative tool that helps law enforcement solve crimes, locate wanted felony suspects, recover stolen vehicles, and find missing persons. The system is not used to monitor residents or track individuals' daily movements.

What can the cameras detect and NOT detect?

What the cameras detect:

  • License plates
  • Vehicle make, model, color, and distinguishing characteristics

What the cameras do NOT detect:

  • Facial recognition
  • Identification of people
  • Gender recognition
  • Race or ethnicity recognition

What policies are in place to protect privacy?

Your privacy matters. The Bexley Police Department has adopted strict policies to ensure responsible use of this technology.

  • Every search requires a legitimate law enforcement purpose.
  • All searches are permanently logged and subject to audit.
  • Data is owned by the Bexley Police Department and is never sold to third parties.
  • Information is shared only with trusted local law enforcement partners involved in criminal investigations.

The system may NOT be used for:

  • Immigration enforcement
  • Traffic enforcement (speeding or red-light citations)
  • Personal use
  • Harassment or intimidation
  • Investigations based solely on race, religion, sex, or other protected characteristics

How have the Flock Safety cameras helped the department make Bexley safer?

Flock Safety has already assisted in several significant investigations, including:

  • Solving the Speedway stabbing investigation by helping identify and locate the suspect.
  • Providing critical investigative leads in a recent felony murder investigation.
  • Locating missing children safely.
  • Recovering stolen vehicles.

How many license plates has the Bexley Flock Safety system captured?

Transparency by the Numbers

License Plate Reads: 1,137,447

Investigative Searches Conducted: 133

Less than 0.012% of all plate reads have been searched.

This demonstrates that the system is used only when there is a legitimate criminal investigation—not for routine monitoring of residents.
