Chief of Police Search Process Outlined

As stated in an update last week announcing Chief Rinehart’s retirement, the search process for a new Chief of Police begins! The process for selecting a new Chief is outlined in the City Charter, with the Mayor charged with selecting and appointing a candidate and City Council is tasked with confirming that appointment.

“The selection and appointment of a new Chief will be one of the most important decisions that we make in the coming years,” said Mayor Kessler. “I’m looking forward to collaboratively seeking input from the community and searching for a Chief of Police who will continue to prioritize the safety of our community while being committed to equitable policing, innovative problem solving, and an emphasis on community policing and interaction.”

The search process will involve selecting a search consultant to assist with the search; appointing a Search Advisory Committee to help with community engagement, help steer the search process, provide input on candidates, and assist with selection of a finalist candidate; and holding a public engagement process throughout to gather input from residents and stakeholder groups from the crafting of the candidate profile all the way through to interaction with finalist candidates.  

The Mayor and city officials are in the process of meeting with stakeholder groups and professionals in recruitment and policing to establish details of the search process and the formation of the Search Advisory Committee, with more information to follow in the coming weeks. Feedback regarding what you would like to see take place during the search process is welcome; please email to provide feedback or to set up a phone call.
