Fifty years ago Bexley’s own Laurel Lea Schaefer was crowned Miss America 1972. Join us via Zoom to celebrate this momentous anniversary. She traveled more than 100,000 miles during her reign and was the last Miss America to visit Vietnam, which is the topic of her upcoming book. A graduate from Ohio University with a BFA in Theatre Arts and Music, Laurel Lea has enjoyed an entertainment career spanning 50 years. Don't miss this engaging and informative conversation between Ms. Schaefer-Bozoukoff and Lori Ann Feibel, member and former president of Bexley City Council.

Laurel Lea Schaefer-Bozoukoff, a 1967 graduate of Bexley High School, was described as the All-American – Girl Next Door when she competed in local, state and Miss America pageants. Among her titles were Miss Southern Ohio, Miss Central Ohio, and Miss Ohio 1971. When heading to the national competition, Laurel light-heartedly exclaimed she was now pursuing the “Triple Crown!” Days after winning, she introduced the idea that Miss America should have a “Mission” to provide more substance and relativity for the year. Laurel showed support and solidarity for U.S. military service members by wearing a pewter wristband inscribed with the name of a POW/MIA. In later years, she became a certified brain injury specialist and provided service members and their families strategies for overcoming the effects of traumatic brain injury. Laurel was also the founder of The Women’s Leadership Foundation and is currently the owner and casting director for Creative Casting Services which specializes in children’s commercials and animated feature films. In 2015, she married fellow Ohio University alum and Retired Air Force Major Michael Bozoukoff. Known as the Major and Miss America, they reside in the Bavarian Village of Leavenworth, WA.

AUDITORIUM: Bexley Public Library, 2411 E Main St, Columbus, OH 43209, USA

Join us to hear about the exhibit at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, Hindsight: The Art of Looking Back, with curator Andrew Richmond.

In person space is limited. Registration is requested. Online registration is required to receive the Zoom link.

Hindsight: The Art of Looking Back showcases the nostalgic work of the Ohio folk artists of the 1800s and 1900s, known collectively as the memory painters. These artists captured the simplicity of earlier days in rural Ohio in unassuming lines and bold color palettes. Often compared with the work of the New York-born Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses, whose paintings feature nostalgic interpretations of the New England landscape, the Ohio painters in Hindsight offer similarly unassuming visual interpretations of life in the Midwest. Included in the exhibition will be paintings by Leuty McGuffey Manahan, Paul Patton, Harold Everett Bayer, Charles Owens and Tella Kitchen. The exhibition will also include three-dimensional “memory objects,” including photographs of colonial-style interiors and gardens taken by the early 20th-century New England minister Wallace Nutting, as well as some of Nutting’s reproduction of colonial-era furniture.

Curator profile: Andrew Richmond is a native Ohioan and received his bachelor's degree in history from Kenyon College and a master's degree in American Material Culture from from the Winterhur Museum and University of Delaware. After more than a decade in the world of antiques and art auctions, he is now a certified personal property appraiser and decorative arts adviser.

With a passion for Ohio decorative arts, Andrew has lectured and published widely on the subject. His previous exhibitions were Equal in Goodness: Ohio Decorative Arts, 1788-1860 (2011), A Tradition of Progress: Ohio Decorative Arts, 1860-1945 (2015), and An Ohio Childhood: 200 Years of Growing Up (2016, co-curated with Hollie Davis).

Standing Up to Censorship - Part II: Ashley Hope Pérez

April 10, 2022  3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
AUDITORIUM: Bexley Public Library, 2411 E Main St, Columbus, OH 43209, USA

https://bexleylibrary.org/event/6147660

Ashley Hope Pérez's YA historical fiction novel, Out of Darkness, was published in 2015 to wide acclaim, winning several awards including the 2016 Michael L. Printz Honor for Excellence in Young Adult Literature and the 2016 Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award.

Out of Darkness is "a riveting novel about segregation, love, family, and the forces that destroy people" that is set in 1937 East Texas around the real-life New London School explosion - the deadliest school disaster in American history.

In the fall of 2021, Ashley Hope Pérez found her novel to be the target of book banning efforts in several states. Out of Darkness was banned or challenged in several school districts in Texas and most recently was removed from the Washington County, Utah school district in December.

Ashley Hope Pérez will talk about about the rise of censorship in schools and libraries, what it is like having her book banned, and the importance of creating diverse literature for young adult readers today. The discussion will be moderated by Bexley Public Library Director Ben Heckman and will be followed by a book signing. Books will be available to purchase through Bookspace for the book signing.

Presenter Bio: Ashley Hope Pérez is the author of three award-winning novels for young adults, Out of Darkness, The Knife and the Butterfly, and What Can(t) Wait. Her latest, Out of Darkness, received a Printz Honor for Literary Excellence in Young Adult Literature, the Tomás Rivera book award, and the Américas book award. Out of Darkness transports readers to 1937 East Texas where stories of the New London school explosion and love across racial boundaries intertwine. The Knife and the Butterfly explores the lives of two teens connected by their struggles—and by an act of violence. Her debut novel What Can(t) Wait was inspired by her high school students in Houston and was named to the YALSA 2012 Best Fiction for Young Adults list. Ashley is a professor of world literature at The Ohio State University and lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband and two sons. She is at work on a fourth novel.

May 1, 2022  7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Recent headlines about global insect declines and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us.  Such losses are not an option if we wish to continue our current standard of living on Planet Earth. The good news is that none of this is inevitable. Tallamy will discuss simple steps that each of us must take to reverse declining biodiversity.

Doug Tallamy is the T.A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, where he has taught insect related courses for 40 years.

Using Native Plants in Nooks and Crannies with Debra Knapke

May 4, 2022  7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
AUDITORIUM: Bexley Public Library, 2411 E Main St, Columbus, OH 43209, USA

https://bexleylibrary.org/event/6087490

We often think of gardens as spaces that are larger areas filled with plants. But the truth for many of us is that we have more small places to fill: 2’ out from a fence, 3-4’ from the side of your home to the property line, a treelawn or a forgotten space in an overgrown corner of your yard. While small spaces can be challenging to plant, design principles and awareness of nature work the same way as for large expansive gardens. Join Debra Knapke as she helps you explore your options.

This program is in partnership with Green Bexley's Love Your Alley program and generously funded by the Bexley Community Foundation.

In person space is limited. Registration is requested. Online registration is required to receive the Zoom link.

After two other careers, in 1992 Debra Knapke turned her avocation of plant study and gardening into her full-time career.  Known as “The Garden Sage”, Debra is passionate about gardening, sustainable garden design and the natural world, and enjoys sharing knowledge through her writing, public speaking, and garden consulting in the private and public sectors. She has served on various local and national committees and boards that focus on education, the environment, and sustainability. She has championed those passions during her two-year term (2014-2016) as Honorary President of the Herb Society of America and currently as the Chair of the Sustainability Committee of GardenComm. In addition, she has mentored the future of the landscape industry at Columbus State Community College for 24 years. She loves being a gardener and has packed an amazing variety of perennials, trees, shrubs, and edibles onto the 2/3-acre lot surrounding her home.

"Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive" by Stephanie Land is the May BPL Book Club selection. Join Debbie and Beth in the Quiet Reading Room for a lively discussion of "Maid" a book of honest, moving prose and great insight.

Land's plans of breaking free from the roots of her hometown in the Pacific Northwest to chase her dreams were cut short when a summer fling turned into an unexpected pregnancy. She turned to housekeeping to make ends meet and took classes online to earn a college degree. And she wrote relentlessly: true stories of overworked and underpaid Americans; of living on food stamps and WIC coupons. Here she explores the underbelly of upper-middle class America and the reality of what it's like to be in service to them.

The Community Freecycle event will run from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, immediately following the community yard sale. Bourbon has continued to grow as the spirit of choice by alcohol lovers across the globe, but many drinkers have a limited understanding of how bourbon is made. Safe Gun Storage

May 16, 2022  7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Cassingham Elementary School, 250 S Cassingham Rd, Bexley, OH 43209, USA

Please join us as Deborah Grayson, a Bexley parent, and Detective Briley of the Bexley Police Department talk about gun safety and actions that can prevent child gun deaths and injuries.

The presentation will take place on Monday, May 16 at 7:00 pm in the Cassingham Theater on S. Cassingham Road. Secure firearm storage is an essential part of home safety. With more guns in more homes due to a rise in gun sales over the past two years, it’s more important than ever for parents and caregivers to know how to securely store guns to protect children.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a rise in unintentional shootings by children and gunfire on school grounds. Gun suicide among children ages 17 and under reached the highest rate in more than 20 years and firearms became the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Storing firearms securely can help prevent these tragedies and keep kids safe.

Jack Roth 5k Run/Walk

June 12, 2022  9:00 am - 11:00 am

"We hope you will join us for the 16th Annual Jack Roth 5k Rock’N’Run/Walk! For 15 years we have welcomed runners and walkers, young children to adults, to the Central Bexley school campus to participate in what has truly become a cherished community event. What began as an idea by Jack’s daughter, Maren, as a way of honoring her father, has grown exponentially from a small, homegrown race to a widespread multi-generational event, with proceeds that have surpassed our highest expectations.

After losing our beloved Janice Roth, Jack’s wife and co-chair of this event, in October of 2019, it prompted us to think about the longevity of the race in her absence. After many heartfelt discussions we made the difficult decision that 2020 would be our final year. Although the pandemic threw a wrench in our plans, we are thrilled to finally be able to have an in-person race in June (combined with a virtual component for anyone that can’t join us on race day) and organize the perfect farewell celebration for an incredible 16 year run. While it is undoubtedly bittersweet, we continue to be in awe of what our amazing group of family, friends, dedicated volunteers and supporters has accomplished and we will cherish these memories for a lifetime." – jackrothfund.org.

Forgotten Landmarks of Columbus

July 25, 2022  7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Bexley Public Library, 2411 E Main St, Columbus, OH 43209, USA

Join authors Doreen Uhas Sauer and Tom Betti as they uncover many interesting, lost, and forgotten landmarks of Columbus like the Walk of Wonders and the Chittenden Hotel.

As the crossroads city of the Midwest, Columbus has always thrived. Over the years, many of the city’s most important and most beautiful buildings—packed with marble, ornate metalwork, painted ceilings and glitz and glamour—have been reduced to dust or left in disrepair. Union Station and stately mansions of well-to-do industrialists are no longer there to tell the story of the city. The Alfred Kelley Mansion, the Chittenden Hotel, the Franklin County Courthouse and the Walk of Wonders in the Great Western Shopping Center were lost, but the palatial Ohio Theatre and the modest Captain Eddie Rickenbacker Home, both designated National Historic Landmarks, were saved.
