Prioritizing Mental Wellness in 2026 and Beyond
As we look ahead to the new year, I want to share some thoughts and resources on mental health and wellness. We likely all know someone, or possibly are someone, who struggles with depression, anxiety, or other behavioral health issues. Some of us have been impacted by suicide, and we all know the importance of connecting those in need with mental health resources. Since joining City Council in 2024, I have served as the liaison to the Board of Health. In this role, I attend meetings of the Board, monitor our relationship with Franklin County Public Health, and work to address health issues within Bexley.
We know that the Bexley Police Department, Bexley City Schools, and other community institutions are on the front line in interacting with residents and children with mental health issues. However, your City Council is stepping up as well. Most notably, City Council approved a budget last month that includes funding for new programs aimed at delivering services to our residents. This includes the creation of a part-time Social Services Coordinator who will be tasked with helping those in need access services including mental health, food and nutrition, housing, and workforce assistance.
Additionally, I will be working with the Bexley Board of Health to establish a Community Health Action Team (CHAT), which will focus on educating residents on mental wellness and how to access services. CHATs are volunteer driven programs offered by Franklin County Public Health that allow constituent communities to tackle public health issues. We are fortunate to have many passionate and capable providers in Bexley who can support this important work. As 2026 gets underway, I hope that we can all commit to taking care of ourselves, our families, our friends, and our neighbors. If you or someone you know needs help, is in crisis, or is contemplating suicide, you can access 24/7 resources by calling or texting 988.
