Qualifications
- Age: 21 at the time of appointment

- High School Grad/GED: Yes

- Vision: Eyesight correctable to 20/30. No color blindness.
- College: A bachelor's or associate's degree is preferred.
- Tattoos, Brands, and Decals: Sworn members are permitted to have visible tattoos, body art, or branding while on duty, or while representing Bexley Police Department. Tattoos, body art, and branding are not permitted on the hands, neck, face, or head. The Chief of Police is the arbiter as to the approval of offensiveness, obscenity or extreme tattoos. Applicants to the police department who are in violation of this requirement are subject to disqualification from the hiring process.

Lateral Officer Appointments
Full-time Police Officers with arrest powers, certified in any state within the United States, with no break in service for two (2) years at the time of application, may apply for a lateral appointment.
Lateral Eligibility Process:
- Human Resources will review applications for minimum qualifications on a continuous basis. When a qualifying application is received, within two weeks a candidate will be contacted to complete the eligibility process, which will include:
- Completion of background waivers
- Personal History Questionnaire
- Background investigation, including application materials from candidate's most recent commission
- Fitness Testing
- If a candidate is eligible to continue in the process, their eligibility is then certified by the Civil Service Commission. Once certified, a candidate remains eligible for consideration for one year.

Step 2: National Testing Network Entrance Exam
National Testing Network (NTN) Instructions:
- Applicants may register for the exam at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com. Call the National Testing Network (NTN) at 1-866-563-3882 with any questions regarding scheduling your exam.
- Your exam score will remain valid with National Testing Network for a period of one (1) year. When registering, be sure to choose City of Bexley as one of the agencies to send your scores to. - After you have tested, the City will receive your scores and will be in contact with all passing candidates about completing the next step in the process.
- A minimum passing score of 70% on the NTN video component is required to proceed through the hiring process. A minimum of 75% is necessary for the reading and writing components.
- Candidates are ranked by a weighted score from a combination of the video and PSSA scores.
Step 3: Physical Ability Testing
Applicants with qualifying test scores from the NTN Entrance Exam will be invited to participate in Physical Ability Testing

Step 4: Background Investigation
The top 10 applicants who successfully pass all requirements of Physical Ability Testing will move to the background investigation phase.
Candidates must complete a detailed Personal History Questionnaire and background waivers, which they will receive from HR.
Step 5: Civil Service Certification
Candidates completing all phases of the eligibility process will be referred to the Civil Service Commission for certification to the eligibility list. Certified candidates remain on the list for one year from certification.
Eligibility List Ranking: A candidates overall ranking will be comprised of their NTN overall score plus additional points for education, military status, Ohio Peace Officer Certification, and Bexley Police Department Reserve Police Officer Service.
- Educational Points – Bachelor’s Degree, 5% of NTN score. (Note: education points awarded only for highest degree achieved)
- Military Points – Honorable Discharge, 5% of NTN score.
- OPOTA Certification – Certified Police Officer in Ohio, 5% of NTN Score.
- Bexley PD Reserve Service – Completion of 1 year of service, 5% of NTN score.
Step 6: Oral Board Interview
Once the final eligibility list is approved and certified by the City’s Civil Service Commission, the top 5 candidates (for a single vacancy) will be asked to be interviewed in front of an Oral Board consisting of police officers and officials from the City of Bexley as determined by the Chief of Police.
Step 7: Conditional Officer of Employment and Final Assessments
Following the Oral Board Interview, a final ranking is made and a candidate will be offered a conditional offer for employment. The conditional offer is contingent upon the candidate successfully passing four additional examinations:
- Polygraph
- Psychological
- Medical
- Hearing test
Step 8: Swearing-in Ceremony
After the successful completion of preliminary examinations, candidates will be sworn in by the Mayor and Chief of Police.
Step 9: Employment, Academy, and Field Training
The Bexley Police Departments sends new officer recruits to basic training at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy.
Following the academy, recruits must complete a 15-week field training program. During this time the recruit learns to do the job in the community with a certified training officer.
